You will need to convert the video to text if you want to add your own subtitles to your YouTube videos but don’t have a script on hand. The quickest way to do this is by using a website or transcribing software.
There are a ton of apps available now that you can use to transcribe your movies, but we use an online tool called Otter because we find it to be quite user-friendly and generally accurate.
If this is the first time you are using Otter, launch it and create an account. Go back to YouTube Studio and play the video you want to add subtitles to by clicking the Record button in the upper right corner of the window without closing it. Now that Otter is transcribing your video in real time, you can see it.
Stop recording once the entire video has been converted to text and wait for it to finish. Your text file can now be found in My Conversations.
The text file will open in front of you with one simple click. The text can be exported or copied. Select Export by selecting the three dots at the top. It’s crucial to note that even if you use the best app to transcribe the video, you will still need to edit and proofread the subtitles because there may be words that were incorrectly transposed.
